Weekly Maintenance Tasks

In Addition to the 'Normal' Daily Tasks:

Perform Virus Updates

Broadband users (cable or DSL) should have your antivirus program set up for automatic updates at all times. Similarly, if you are on dialup, you should have your antivirus program set up to update automatically when you connect to the internet.  If not, you should make sure you check for any new and updated virus definitions a minimum of once a week.

Pop-up Stoppers and Adblock

Besides a search box, both Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox now have a built-in popup stoppers, thus the need for add-on search tool bars for this function (Google, Yahoo, etc.) has been considerably reduced. The Firefox add-on, Adblock, can also suppress advertising within web pages which has the beneficial side effect of letting pages load faster!

Organize All Programs Menu (XP)

When you hover the mouse over All Programs you will see a menu appear from which you can access the programs currently installed on your PC. After installing new software it will (normally) appear on the programs menu.

You can rename any program on the menu by right clicking on it and selecting rename from the menu that appears.

To alphabetize the list, right click and choose "sort by name" from the menu.

To open a program simply left click on it,  Some options have a small black arrow to the far right side which indicates that it contains another sub-menu (e.g., the accessories folder has a sub-menu). Check each sub-menu - if it only has one file in the menu, then move that file to the main start menu by dragging it to the main bar - then delete the folder it was in originally.

We recommend that you uninstall any program that you are no longer using. To uninstall a program, either click the uninstall link for that program in the start menu (if available) or use the add/delete programs applet in the control panel.

Deleting the program entry from the programs menu does not uninstall the software.

A more thorough re-organization of the start menu can be done with Windows Explorer.

Simply find the c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu folder and then move, rename, delete and reorganize to your hearts content.

But 'your' use pattern may not require it be done until after four or more weekly tasks have been completed, you need to decide 'your' schedule based on 'your' usage pattern.

Click on the animated arrow to return to the table of recommended maintenance tasks.
