Links are provided to the web site of each program so you can obtain the latest version and read their instructions.

ZoneAlarmŽ Free
Firewall

Internet-connected computers with high-speed internet connections can receive more than 300 automated hacker probes per hour; thus it is critical you have a firewall that protects you from the vermin of the Internet. Microsoft Windows XP SP2 has a firewall installed by default, but more complete protection is available. ZoneAlarm can block both incoming and outgoing internet traffic upon demand.

Note: Windows XP has a built-in firewall but it only blocks incoming traffic. Make sure it is activated only if you are not using any other firewall.

CAUTION:  You should only use one firewall software program. The major security suites (Symantec (Norton), McAfee, Trend) include a firewall. If you have one of these security suites and are not having problems, you do not need to use this free program.

Look in middle of screen for dim window of people looking at you under Buy Now for

ZoneAlarm FREE Firewall.

Note:  ZoneAlarmŽ with antivirus is $29.95.

A program suite with other capabilities are as high as $59.95.

Once you have downloaded and installed the recommended utilities, you can begin the first cleanup of your computer.  Depending on the individual use and condition of each computer, the time to accomplish this will vary from an hour or so up to six or seven hours.  There is no need to rush through the cleanup process - it can even be accomplished in increments.  The important point to remember is that in order to keep your computer running smoothly, you will need to perform maintenance on a routine basis.  The first cleanup will take much longer than any succeeding maintenance.
